Concentration in Fisheries
The Fisheries Concentration curriculum enables students to explore the scientific and applied aspects of fisheries ecology and management and gain experience in field, laboratory, and analytical methods. Students enrolled in this concentration often are active in the university’s student sub-unit of the American Fisheries Society, an international organization composed of professionals and students in the aquatic sciences. This curriculum allows students to meet the requirements for professional certification by the American Fisheries Society. In addition to the core curriculum, students must take the following courses:
WLE 340/341 Freshwater Fisheries Ecology & Management |
|
Fisheries e.g.,
SMS 211 Introduction to Aquaculture + AVS 420 Fish Aquaculture I (identical to SMS 420)
SMS 321 Introduction to Fisheries Science
SMS 552 Ecological Approaches to Fisheries Management
SMS 562 Fisheries Population Dynamics
WLE 490/650 Quantitative Methods & Analyses in Freshwater Fisheries Ecology |
|
Aquatic science* (300-level or higher); e.g., listed above or:
BIO 430 Ecology and Systematics of Aquatic Insects
BIO 447 Experimental Aquatic Ecology
BIO 463 River Ecology
BIO 468 Limnology
SMS 302 Oceanography
SMS 322 Biology of Marine Vertebrates
SMS 422 Biology of Fishes
WLE 423 Wetland Ecology & Conservation |
|
* These courses should be complementary and additive to the core curriculum. For example, if you have taken BIO 430 then consider BIO 463 because you cannot count BIO 430 twice.
