Field Ornithology

Field Ornithology is a beginning to intermediate level natural history course crafted to introduce students to the rich array of bird species breeding in and migrating through central and eastern Maine.  The course is directly applicable to wildlife ecology and parks and recreation majors as well as individuals interested in birds, wetland ecology, and the natural history of Maine ecosystems.  Field ornithology is designed to introduce and gain hands-on field experience using the most widely utilized professional and amateur bird censusing methods.  Emphasis is on identification by sight and sound; recognition of breeding habitat preferences; feeding habits; territorial behavior; identification of dominant trees, shrubs, and herbaceous species; and understanding relationships between birds and their habitats, including human impacts.
